LetzCharge Deploys Bamboo RFID Cards for Luxembourg EV Fleet

Learn how LetzCharge by Minusines paired their €2.5M Kempower infrastructure with sustainable bamboo RFID cards for Luxembourg's national EV network.

LetzCharge Deploys Bamboo RFID Cards for Luxembourg EV Fleet

As European nations accelerate their transition to zero-emission public transport, the infrastructure required to support these fleets must be robust, scalable, and environmentally conscious. In Luxembourg, Minusines—a leading distributor of electrical equipment—launched the LetzCharge brand to spearhead the country's EV infrastructure rollout. To complement a massive new public transit project, LetzCharge partnered with ChargeRFID to deliver a unique access solution.

The Partnership Context

Minusines recently secured a landmark €2.5 million deal to deploy state-of-the-art Kempower charging infrastructure across major bus depots in Luxembourg. This infrastructure is critical to keeping the national fleet of electric buses operational around the clock.

LetzCharge needed an access credential for the bus operators and fleet managers that reflected the green energy initiatives of the Luxembourg government. They required a partner who understood the technical nuances of Kempower hardware and could provide a physical card that was as sustainable as the electric buses themselves. ChargeRFID was selected for our ability to merge cutting-edge RFID technology with innovative, eco-friendly materials.

The Challenge

The environment of a commercial bus depot is demanding. Fleet drivers work in all weather conditions, and the RFID cards are subjected to heavy, daily use—often dropped, exposed to moisture, or left in hot cabins.

Beyond physical durability, the technical integration had to be flawless. The Kempower satellite chargers manage dynamic load balancing across the depot, and the authorization process needed to be instantaneous to keep the strict bus schedules on track. LetzCharge needed a card that bypassed traditional plastics without compromising on the ruggedness required for industrial fleet operations.

The Solution

To meet LetzCharge's unique requirements, ChargeRFID proposed and manufactured custom bamboo RFID cards EV charging operators increasingly favor for their blend of strength and sustainability. Bamboo is incredibly resilient, naturally water-resistant, and possesses a high tensile strength, making it ideal for the rough-and-tumble environment of a bus depot.

Embedded within these durable bamboo shells are highly secure MIFARE DESFire EV2 and EV3 chips. We ensured that the LetzCharge charging card was fully optimized for OCPP compatibility, allowing for seamless communication with the Kempower backend system. When a bus driver taps their bamboo card, the DESFire chip instantly authenticates via OCPP, initiating the charge and logging the session data for the depot's energy management software in milliseconds.

The Sustainability Angle

Luxembourg's push for electric public transit is driven by a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact. Providing drivers with virgin plastic cards would have been a step backward.

Bamboo is one of the most renewable resources on the planet, growing rapidly without the need for pesticides or massive amounts of water. By choosing bamboo, LetzCharge adopted truly sustainable charging cards that align perfectly with their green energy brand. At the end of their long operational life, the bamboo casing is biodegradable, drastically reducing the e-waste footprint of the depot's operations.

Results and Impact

The integration of ChargeRFID's bamboo cards with the €2.5M Kempower infrastructure has been a total success. Fleet managers at LetzCharge report that the cards have held up exceptionally well under the demanding conditions of the bus depots.

The natural aesthetic of the bamboo has also been a point of pride among the transit operators, serving as a tangible symbol of Luxembourg's commitment to sustainability. Most importantly, the MIFARE DESFire EV2/EV3 technology has ensured 100% uptime in session authorizations, keeping the electric buses charged and running on schedule.
